Introduction
CIPIS (Clairvolex Intellectual Property Information Services) is an Indian IP database which contains “400,000 Indian IP records (patents & designs)” and “complete bibliographic data from” 1971-present.[1] CIPIS is produced by Clairvolex Knowledge Processes Pvt. Ltd., an “Intellectual Property (IP) and legal outsourcing company.”[2] CIPIS also includes limited coverage of Indian trademarks.
Use and Availability
The quick, advanced, and expert search interfaces for the Patent Database, Design Database, and Trademark Database are free to access. It should be noted that the Patent and Design databases both have an expert search form, but the Trademark Database only has quick and advanced forms. Users must have a subscription to access Full Text, File Wrapper, Status Update, Patent Watch, Design Watch, or Trademark Watch interfaces. These additional interfaces appear to allow the user to order full-text patent documents, file histories, and document/legal status monitoring services through CIPIS. Users can view the basic bibliographic information in the hit list for the first five results of each search, but users must have a subscription to view the remaining search results and the full-text versions of the results.
The quick search format includes a single search box that searches within a limited number of fields, like Title, Abstract, Applicant Name, etc. The advanced search allows users to search within multiple fields at the same time, combining search terms with Boolean operators AND/OR. Expert search utilizes a command line interface, where users can manually create search strings. The Design search interface includes the option to search by Locarno class and subclasses. [1]
The search results in the hit-list can't be re-sorted alphabetically (by title or assignee) or chronologically (by filing date or patent/application number), but users can utilize a drop-down menu of result numbers or arrows to navigate through the pages of the hit list. The user can choose to sort the results by filing, publication, international filing, or priority date (in ascending or descending order) through the expert search form. Through the advanced and expert search forms, users can also select how many results to display per page. Users can select to view only granted or pending documents (or both) through a drop-down menu option in the Advanced and Expert Search forms of the patent database.
If a user selects to view the full record of a result from the hit-list, the full record will display in a new tab or window. The full record for patent documents displays basic bibliographic information (i.e. title, abstract, assignee, document number, filing date, IPC code, etc.) Occasionally, a representative image is also displayed in the full record for patent documents. Design documents include basic bibliographic data, a representative image (when available), and a Locarno classification code.
Some help information is provided directly through the search forms, such as a list of available field codes below the expert search form. No query formatting guidelines are provided on any of the search forms, but a help guide is provided to subscribed users.
