Any resource directed to the field of semiconductors, or naming it as an area of significant coverage. Artificial Intelligence

This is a generic category for artificial intelligence type computers and digital data processing systems and corresponding data processing methods and products for emulation of intelligence (i.e., knowledge based systems, reasoning systems, and knowledge acquisition systems); and including systems for reasoning with uncertainty (e.g., fuzzy logic systems), adaptive systems, machine learning systems, and artificial neural networks.


Computer Graphics

This category is for selective electrical control of two or more light-generating or light-controlling display elements in accordance with a received or stored image data signal. The image data includes character, graphical information or display attribute data. The image data may include, for example, information data from a peripheral input device, from the reception of a television signal, from the recognition of image data, or from the generation or creation of image data by a computer.


Communications Security

This category is for algorithms and protocols for reliably communicating data across different shared or dedicated media. It will also include practical aspects of securing computer systems and computer networks as well as cryptography which applies results from complexity, probability and number theory to invent and break codes, and analyze the security of cryptographic protocols.


Databases

This is the category is for data processing and for the retrieval of data stored in a database or as computer files. This category is also for organizing and inter-relating data or files (e.g., relational, network, hierarchical, and entity-relationship models); generic data, file and directory upkeep; file naming; and file and database maintenance which includes integrity consideration, recovery, and versioning. The three main fields that should be included in this category should be database and file accessing, database schema and data structure and file and database maintenance.


General Computer Science

This is the category is generally for *theory* of computer science and/or resources that can’t be classified elsewhere in the hierarchy. (Note: many General Computer Science resources have been propagated down into sub-levels of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Categories. Communications

This category is for subject matter, not elsewhere classified, relating to communication by means which are in part or in whole electrical. Communications is defined, for the purpose of this definition, as being the handling of information or intelligence and is not restricted to the conveying of said information or intelligence between geographically spaced points. Information or intelligence is defined, for the purpose of this definition, as being the subject matter which is handled by signaling systems or signaling devices (such as telegraph systems) or by that portion of non-signaling systems or non-signaling devices (such as power supply systems) which is designated as having a control function (such as the supervisory circuits which control the circuit breakers of an electric power network). Computer Engineering

Computer engineering deals with the design of computers and computer systems such as computer architecture. This also involves ASIC design, FPGA development, firmware development, hardware-(firmware/software) integration, circuit design, and system-level design and integration.


Control Systems

Could also be called Control Engineering. This category is for the modeling of a diverse range of dynamic systems and the design of controllers that will cause these systems to behave in the desired manner.

General Electronics and Electrical Engineering

This category encompasses databases that are generally directed to the entire field of electronics. This is also the category is for publications/databases that can’t be classified elsewhere in the hierarchy. (NOTE: many General Computer Science resources have been propagated down into sub-levels of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Categories. However, pure Electrical Engineering resources are not currently propagated down into EE sub-levels).


Integrated Circuits, Microelectronics, Semiconductors

This category is for the design and microfabrication of very small electronic circuit components for use in an integrated circuit or sometimes for use on their own as a general electronic component. The most common microelectronic components are semiconductor transistors, although all main electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors) can be created at a microscopic level.


Materials – Electrical

Resources relates to the electronic, optical, thermal, and magnetic properties of materials. Recourses include electron theory, solid-state physics, and quantum mechanics for understanding of the interaction of electrons in a material and between materials. Databases that appear in this category may also appear in Materials – Optical.


Nanotechnology

This field is for the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures of the size of 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size. It ranges from novel extensions of conventional device physics, to completely new approaches based upon molecular self-assembly, to developing new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale, even to speculation on whether we can directly control matter on the atomic scale.


Networking

This category is for anything related to networking.


Power Systems (Power Engineering)

This category is for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity as well as the design of a range of related devices. These include transformers, electric generators, electric motors, high voltage engineering and power electronics.


Signal Processing

Signal processing is analysis, interpretation, and manipulation of signals. (This might be a little bit more broad as it might include things in telecommunications, but there are things in here that might not go into telecommunications, such as Fourier Transforms. )


Telecommunications

This category is for the transmission of information across a channel such as a coax cable, optical fiber or free space. Transmissions across free space require information to be encoded in a carrier wave in order to shift the information to a carrier frequency suitable for transmission, this is known as modulation. Popular analog modulation techniques include amplitude modulation and frequency modulation (such as FDMA, TDMA, FDD, TDD, FDM, TDM).


Energy

General Energy

Any database that says it generally covers energy technologies including nuclear power, power plant design, environmental concerns, etc. but excluding petroleum industry publications.

General Agriculture

Veterinary Science

Botany

This category includes any database directed to, or with significant coverage of, plant biology - databases in this category may also refer to "plant science." Gardening is also included in this category, but agriculture is excluded.


Cell Biology

This category includes any resource directed to, or with significant coverage of, cell biology. It includes stem cell research.

Ecology

This category includes any resource directed to, or with significant coverage of, ecology. In addition to resources directly targeted to ecological topics, databases directed to the environment and toxicity in the environment may also be included here.

General Biochemistry

This category includes all resourced directed generally to biochemistry and molecular biology. Databases covering all organic chemistry topics have been placed in the General Organic Chemistry category instead of this category. Databases directed to genetic information has been placed in Genes and Proteins, while genetic information sequence resources have been placed in Sequence Databases. Resources directed to Cell Biology and Microbiology resources specifically have been placed in those respective categories. All resources related to the drug development cycle have been placed in General Pharmaceuticals.

Molecular biology is the study of interactions between systems within a cell on the molecular level - it heavily overlaps with the field of biochemistry. It is the study of the process of replication, transcription and translation of genetic material. Biochemistry is more general - it goes beyond genetic material to study all chemical processes of life and biologically active molecules.


Genes and Proteins

Any resource directed specifically to genes and/or proteins is included here. Databases which include searchable sequence information are also separated and classified in Sequence Databases.


Macromolecular Structure Databases

Any resource directed to, or useful during the searching of, protein structure information is included here.


Sequence Databases

Any resource which contains searchable genetic sequence information, either in nucleotide or amino acid format.


General Pharmaceutical

Any resource which relates to (or is useful during) any phase of the drug development cycle, from initial development to clinical testing. Databases directed to specific pathologies, such as cancer or aids, are included here. Microbiology

This category includes any resource directed to, or with significant coverage of, microbiology.

From Wikipedia: Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, which are unicellular or cell-cluster microscopic organisms. This includes eukaryotes such as fungi and protists, and prokaryotes, which are bacteria and archaea. Viruses, though not strictly classed as living organisms, are also studied. In short; microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Microbiology is a broad term which includes virology, mycology, parasitology, bacteriology and other branches.


General Biotechnology

This category includes any resource with a focus on general biotechnology topics. Databases directed primarily to agriculture, food science, or medicinal topics are placed in those respective categories and excluded from this one unless they claim substantial focus on biotechnology topics. Genetic sequence databases are excluded from this category. Stem cell resources may be included in this category, but should also be included in Cell Biology.
