Introduction

The Industrial Property Digital Library (IP-Lib), created by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam, allows users to search for and view published applications and granted patents, industrial designs, and trademarks.[1] According to the introductory page of the system, a November 2008 update added the following functions:[1]

  • "System displays the total hit count to respond to search query, and user can see detail information of less than 1000 records"
  • "System provides automatic Vietnamese - English translation for several text items"
  • "User can see published information as gazette layout in PDF"

Users can choose to view the interface in either English or Vietnamese by selecting their language of choice in the upper right corner of the page.

Use

Through the home page, users can access three search forms: patent search, industrial design search, or trademark search.

Patent Search

Users can search for patent documents in this section by combining search terms defined in specific fields by a drop-down menu beside each text box. A second drop-down menu beside the field menu allows users to select a comparison operator between the search field and the term (=,>,<,>=,<=,<>). Finally, users can select Boolean operators between each search term. Text boxes for up to four search terms (divided by three Boolean operators) are provided. Correct formatting for the queries and wildcard operators are described in the help section, accessible in the upper right corner of the page between the 'Home" and "About" links. Users can also search or browse through the IPC classification hierarchal index through this section by selecting the "IPC" button in the upper right corner.

After users submit a query through the patent search form, the results list will appear in Vietnamese. Users can choose the "Compact," "Extended," or "Bibliographic Details" view for the result listings. A "Translate" button in the upper right corner will translate the results list or full record views to English (probably through on-the-fly machine translation). Users can select to return to the search form to refine their query, or they can view the full record of a document. The full record contains five separate sections:

  • Bibliographic details
  • Description
  • Claims
  • Drawings
  • Legal status

Users can navigate through the full record views through forward/backward arrows without returning to the hit list. When a users selects an image from a full record view, the image will appear in a separate window. Through this window, the user can zoom in, zoom out, view the full size, or view the thumbnail of the image.

Industrial Design

The industrial design search form is formatted in the same manner as the patent search form, with up to four terms (with fields and comparison operators selected by drop-down menu) separated by Boolean operators. Users can access the help section and browse or search the Locarno classification system through links in the upper right corner of the page.

The results list and full record view are also formatted in the same manner as the patents search, except the available sections in the full record view for industrial designs are:

  • Drawings
  • Main bibliographic details
  • Applicant/Right Holder
  • Author
  • Legal Status

Trademark Search

The trademark search form is formatted in the same manner as the other two search forms, with up to four terms (with fields and comparison operators selected by drop-down menu) separated by Boolean operators. Users can access the help section and browse or search the Nice and Vienna classification systems through links in the upper right corner of the page.

Thumbnails of the trademark image are displayed in the results list, along with the trademark name, application number, and registration number (an image-only results list is also available). Users can select the trademark thumbnail to view a larger version of the image. If a user selects the application number in the results list, they can view details on the application date and priority date.
