Introduction

BigPatents India (previously available here) was a free searchable database of "post-TRIPs Indian patent applications and issued patents", created by "Professor Bhaven Sampat, who teaches at the Mailman School of Public Health in Columbia University" and "Patrick Crosby of XB Labs, LLC and bigpatents.com."[1] According to a post on SpicyIP,

The bulk of the data was parsed from the Indian patent journals, beginning with those published in January, 2005, using proprietary algorithms developed by XB Labs. Data not parsable via programming were hand coded by Digital Divide Data, a non-profit social enterprise offering data entry services.[1]

As of November 2012, this tool no longer appears to be available.

Use

Both basic and advanced search forms consist of a single search field, where it seems that only basic keyword searches can be performed. There are no defined search fields or operators for the search form.

"Applications" and "Granted Patents" are sortable by date or by journal. Dates and journals are both listed in reverse chronological order, with the latest dates or journals appearing first in the list. Users can also search for assignees or inventors by browsing through an alphabetical index of individual and company names.

Data included in the full listing of the patent applications includes title, publication number, filing date, publication date, abstract, applicant, inventor, and international classification information. A link to the application at the Indian Patent Information Retrieval System is also given. Information provided about granted patents includes the patent title, patent number, application number, journal date, patentee, and filing date. A link to the original application information at BigPatents India is also provided.
