Appendix I: Patent Authority Coverage
The following table shows coverage dates for each country broken down by technology area. Dates of coverage for minor status and major status are shown separately, to illustrate the evolution of coverage for patenting authorities which may have started out with minor status. Major/minor status is a historical designation that was once used to indicate when an abstract and manual coding would be available for records from a given country. Currently, DWPI provides data equally no matter the historical major/minor designation.
The table produced below does not include document kind codes. See the Major Recent Updates section, above, for information on new document kind coverage that has been recently added to the database. For more information about the document kind codes available for each patent authority collection in DWPI, see "Publication Kind Codes in STN Patent Databases,"[1] a manual produced by STN for the comparison of three STN databases: INPADOCDB (an STN version of the INPADOC database produced by the EPO), Derwent World Patents Index (called WPINDEX on STN), and CAplus (a proprietary chemical patent and literature database produced by CAS). This table was sourced from the 6th edition of Global Patent Sources: An Overview of International Patents, a DWPI reference guide published by Thomson Scientific (the former name of the Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property Group) published in January of 2007.[2] This table was provided in August of 2010 in an e-mail communication from a Thomson Reuters representative.[3] The "Additional Information" column gives information about updates to the file that have taken place since the 2007 publication of Global Patent Sources.
