EBSCO has been in the publishing and content business for over 60 years, and shows no signs of tiring. Their history in the publishing industry leads directly to the greatest strength EBSCOhost has: a very broad and deep collection that offers significant full text availability. Their efforts to further improve their collection are evident, and they are justifiably proud of the amount of content already available.
EBSCO’s apparent company strategy is to appeal to the most people possible with the widest breadth of content possible, and to make that content easy to access with a simple interface that won’t intimidate less experienced searchers. It is a strategy aimed squarely at the academic market’s harried humanities and social sciences students not interested in learning a hundred operators, and the corporate market where quick research on competing products and companies can be invaluable.
The recent release of EBSCOhost 2.0 also testifies to their commitment to remaining competitive. EBSCOhost is a modern product that compares favorably to other database services, and features listed as “Coming Soon” indicate a desire to remain at the forefront of search interface development. Though EBSCO is a large company with numerous branches and business interests, EBSCOhost is one of their marquee products in which long-term investment is assured.
