Engineering Index Backfile
The Engineering Index Backfile is a static archive covering 80 years of scientific literature from across the engineering disciplines. The Ei Backfile serves as a historical archive supplement to Compendex. The database contains over 1.7 million records spanning the years 1884-1968 (directly leading up to the more recent Compendex file coverage). Each record in the Ei Backfile has been manually re-keyed into the database to reduce errors that could have occurred in the process of transferring the formerly printed records into digital format. The Bibliographic records are fully indexed and abstracted and are searchable by Title, Author, Abstract, Publication Name, as well as Original Index Terms.
Inspec
Inspec is a prominent indexed bibliographic database of scientific literature focusing on the fields of physics, electrical engineering, electronics, control engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science. Inspec is published by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and boasts of containing over 8 million records spanning from 1969 to the present day. Over 400,000 records from 80 countries are added to the database each year. Inspec features controlled subject indexing using the Inspec thesaurus and classification which allow for quick and efficient searching. See the Inspec Intellogist article for a detailed look at this database.

Inspec Archive
The Inspec Archive is a static digital collection of the Science Abstracts Journals from 1898 to 1968 (70 years). The archive contains more than 873,000 records focusing on the subjects of physics, electrical engineering, electronics computing and control engineering. Like the Engineering Index Backfile, records in the Inspec Archive have been manually re-keyed to assure accuracy given the considerable age of these documents. Graphs, figures, and tables from the original source documents have been maintained and are included with each record. Documents include Inspec Controlled Terms as well as Classification Codes. The Inspec Archive can be especially useful for finding the very first historical reference to a particular technology.

Ei Patents
Ei Patents is one of the most recently added databases to Engineering Village. The Ei Patents datafile is the sole source of patent data available on Engineering Village. This datafile contains over 7.8 million records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and over 2.75 million records from the European Patent Office (EPO).
When searching within the Ei Patents datafile, the US and EPO collection can be searched simultaneously or separately. This allows a user to focus only on US patents or solely on European patents when desired. Additionally, the Engineering Village interface inserts links from a patent to its citations within the published literature. Records in Ei Patents are linked to full-text PDF documents from the respective patenting authority. Searching using patent classifications is also possible with Ei Patents. USPC, IPC, and ECLA codes are all indexed and fully searchable.
Referex
The Referex database on Engineering Village is unique in that it consists of a compilation of engineering books converted to electronic format (e-books) rather than articles from scientific journals. More than 1,600 e-book titles are fully searchable and available in PDF format on Referex. The types of books in the database include handbooks, professional reference books, “How-To” guides, and practice materials.
Referex is made up of six editorially crafted sub-collections:
- Chemical, Petrochemical, and Process Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering and Materials
- Electronics and Electrical Engineering
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Computing
- Networking and Security
Search results within each collection can be narrowed, and books can be viewed by chapter and section. E-books within Referex may be viewed online, downloaded, or printed by the user. Referex subscribers enjoy flat-fee unlimited downloads so that Referex may be used as a reference source and consulted often, without worrying the user with per-use costs.
A complete list of titles within each Referex collection can be viewed at http://www.ei.org/referex.
