Legal Status Information

In addition to collecting bibliographic records from patent offices around the world, the EPO also maintains a database of worldwide legal status information. This legal status data is part of the INPADOC service, and is widely used throughout the patent searching industry. Most subscription service providers license this data, as it is the major source for worldwide legal status data, and a widely-used resource in the patent information community.

The data available through INPADOC is subject to the quality and timeliness standards of the national patent offices themselves. The EPO publishes notices about gaps or delays in coverage, and advises all users to double-check any INPADOC legal status data by also querying the legal register of the issuing patent authority, especially when absolute certainty is required.

INPADOC legal status can be checked for any document found through Espacenet. For more information, see the Viewing Legal Status section.
