Classification Search

The classification search tool on Espacenet is an assist tool to help users identify ECLA classifications of interest with regard to the search subject matter. The system hosts a complete definition of ECLA classes, including the experimental Y class for emerging areas in nanotechnology. The format of this classification schedule is interactive, so that users may expand and collapse areas within the classification scheme.

The Classification Search allows you to search for ECLA classification descriptions by keyword or symbol. You can also browse through the hierarchy.

This tool is designed for fast browsing. Detailed notes about the classes can be hidden or shown via the “show notes” link that appears at the bottom of the page. Clicking on any class or subclass will automatically expand the the surrounding hierarchy of related classes.

The expanded hierarchy of ECLA sub-groups under C02F9 (partial view).

Once the desired classifications are found in the class schedule, up to ten terms can be automatically placed in the Advanced search form via the “Copy to search form” feature. (The restriction of ten search terms per field in the Advanced search form limits the number of classes that can be chosen from the Classification search page.)
