Viewing Patent Citations

Forward and backwards citations are available to the user within FreePatentsOnline. Backwards citations can be seen listed as part of the full text view of the record (complete with links that will navigate users directly to the cited document itself). Forward citations can be found by creating a query in the search form or by clicking the appropriate link in the full text view page.

Non-patent citations, where present, can be viewed as part of the record’s bibliographic data. They are also searchable, and can be queried by keyword in the “Other Reference” field of the expert search form. For more information on citation availability and other coverage, see the Data Coverage Summary section.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

Searching for non-patent citations within a specific field in the search form is a nice feature of FreePatentsOnline. It allows the user to eliminate false hits when searching for certain journal names, for example. On the other hand, forcing the user to generate a new query and hit list to display the forward citations of a record can slow down workflow and can be a hindrance to some.
