Sources: A large percentage of the database is composed of about 5,000 journals and serials dating back to 1968, the three Science Abstracts print publications dating back to 1898: Physics Abstracts, Electrical and Electronics Abstracts, and Computer and Control Abstracts, patent documents from the US and UK offices. The database also hosts metadata from 186 Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) journals. Finally, about 2,000 video presentations from IET.tv are indexed in the database.
Document Types Index: Journals, Books and Monographs, Video Presentations, Conferences, Dissertations, Patents, Reports, Unpublished Papers, and Standards
Geographic Coverage: International (Journals, Books, Conferences, Dissertations, Reports); restricted to US and UK for available patent coverage.
Languages: Mainly English, about 12% other languages, all sources are abstracted in English.
Dates Covered: 1898-1968 for Science Abstracts print publications;1968-present for other Journals, Books, Conferences, Dissertations, and Reports; 1968-1976 for US and UK patents.
Number of Records: Around 5,000 Journals. Over 2,500 conference proceedings. 20,629 US and UK Patents (as of 2009). Around 2,000 videos by the end of 2011. 12 million records as of June 2011.
Specific information related to the file structure: Inspec is split into multiple files by Dialog: 1898 - present (File 2), 1969 - present (File 3), 1983 - present (File 4), 1898 - 1968 (File 202). Inspec is sometimes split into two files, Inspec (1969-present) and Inspec Archive (1898-1968, covering the Science Abstracts years), division of files depends on database supplier.
Update Frequency: Weekly with around 725,000 records added annually; automatic current-awareness searches (SDIs) also update weekly.
