Sample Records

These sample records illustrate the layout of the fields and data entry within those fields.

Bibliographic Data

Inspec presents bibliographic data for records in fields. General bibliographic fields such as title, authors, source, and publication date are always present.

Engineering Village sample record shows bibliographic data and record in full. A link is given to "Full-text and Local Holdings" if they are available.

Special Indexing

One component of the strength of Inspec comes from special indexing. Indexing is a system of tagging records with terms that allow users to view categories of records for more accurate slices of information.

Numerical and Chemical Indexing
Numerical and Chemical Indexing contains specific tags to records regarding units and chemical properties respectively.

Astronomical Indexing and Treatment Codes
Astronomical Indexing contains tags to records relating to astronomical terms and locations. The Treatment field contains information regarding what kind of material is in a record, ranging from practical to theoretical to experimental.

Controlled and Uncontrolled Index
The Controlled Index contains tags from the Inspec Thesaurus and the Uncontrolled Index contains additional tags which are attached at the discretion of the indexer to better categorize the knowledge in each record.

DialogWeb displays a sample record. The Controlled Index and Uncontrolled Index are labeled as descriptors and identifiers respectively. The Controlled Index is filled out with terms from the INSPEC Thesaurus and the Uncontrolled Index is used for terms at the discretion of the IP professional who compiles the file.
