Classification

At least one of more than 5500 Inspec Classifications are given to each file. The classifications are broken down into five top level subfiles, Physics (Subfile A), Electrical Engineering & Electronics (Subfile B), Computers & Control (Subfile C), Information Technology (Subfile D), and Mechanical and Production Engineering (Subfile E). Classifications are further broken down by three numerical headings and an optional fourth qualifying level. The resulting classification is somewhere around the level of detail of a top level subclass for the USPTO classification or IPC classification. Examples of Inspec classifications include “E2330 Mechanical drives and transmissions” and “B2570 Semiconductor integrated circuits”.

Additionally, Inspec provides a Treatment field for each file which indicates the author’s approach to the subject. The codes of this section of the record include: Applications, Bibliographic/Literature Survey, Economic/Commercial/Market Survey, General or Review, New Development, Practical, Product Review, Theoretical/Mathematical, and Experimental.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

The level of classification present in Inspec can be useful to search in combination with other limiting factors, but is too broad to be searched exhaustively by class. The Treatment field also is of tangential usefulness, but at a glance may help weed out files that are not of interest more than indicate whether a file is actually of interest. For example, a searcher may not be interested in a survey about particle accelerators and is only interested in practical applications. Classifications are not retroactively updated in the way that some patent information systems update classifications on patents based on the latest USPTO and IPC class listings.
