Rewritten Titles or Abstracts
Titles and abstracts are only rewritten when in another language besides English. Titles and abstracts are also created in English by Inspec when not available on the source documentation. When the title and/or abstract is available in English as written by the author or source, that information is included into the file.
The lack of rewritten titles and abstracts for all records in the file is a disadvantage, since arcane language used by the author may obscure the document and prevent it from being found by a text search in the title or abstract limited search. However, this limitation is mostly mitigated by the presence of the controlled and uncontrolled index sections that can be key word searched in a summary level way that titles or abstracts may wish to be searched by searchers. The presence of the author’s original title and abstract, on the other hand, allows the searcher to more directly see the intention of the author without an intermediary possibly misunderstanding the subject matter. Additionally, it is a great benefit to have titles and abstracts rewritten into English from other languages for the English speaking searcher.
