Images

Although MARPAT records represent patent documents, the records do not contain representative patent drawings. Instead, the records contain Markush structure images, often represented by a series of G-groups and the fragments that they represent, which are added to the records by CAS indexing staff. An example of one such image is below.

An image of a Markush structure which has been claimed in a patent and indexed to that patent’s MARPAT record.

More than 79,000 chemical substance images were added to to the MARPAT and CA/CAplus databases on STN and SciFinder at the beginning of 2012, and structure graphics are now available for more than 75% of MARPAT records.[1]

Representative patent drawings are also sometimes included in MARPAT records, if they were part of the original record in the CAplus file as well (all MARPAT records also exist in the CAplus database).
