System Features

Feature Comments
Patent data collections created by topic:   Chemical (including pharmaceutical) topics. The MARPAT file is a subset of records found in CAplus, and contains bibliographic records for only those patents that contain generically disclosed chemical structures (Markush structures).
MARPAT indexing includes organic and organometallic molecules only, and excludes alloys, metal oxides, inorganic salts, intermetallics, and polymers.
Contains data indexed by non-patent-office developed classification schemes (e.g. Derwent Manual Codes): Yes, the file contains generic chemical structure indexing.
Search Capabilities
IPC code searching: No, however, search results can be transferred into the CAplus file on STN, where class searching is available. Rolled-up IPC Core Codes have been removed from IPC reclassifications (IPCR field) in CAplus.[1]
US Classification searching: No, however, search results can be transferred into the CAplus file on STN, where class searching is available.
ECLA code searching: No, however, search results can be transferred into the CAplus file on STN, where class searching is available. An ECLA thesaurus is also now available on CA/CAplus databases.[2]
Japanese F-terms or File Indexing: No, however, search results can be transferred into the CAplus file on STN, where F-term searching is available for documents from January 2004 to the present.[3]
Date-limited searching: Yes, users may search the MARPAT file by two database-related parameters: entry date and update date. Searching by patent-related dates such as issue, filing or priority date must be performed by switching into the CAplus bibliographic file on STN.
Section-specific Text Searching (e.g. a search in “claims only”?): No, text searching in patent documents is not available in MARPAT; however, keyword searching through CAS structure indexing data is available.
Country/Collection-specific searching: No
Chemical Structure Draw/Search Tool: Yes
Command line interface: Yes
Web-Browser Search Form: Yes, STN on the Web
Combining (stacking) Search Queries: Yes
Viewing Results
Uses a relevancy ranking when listing search results: No
Advanced Keyword Highlighting (the ability to define terms to be highlighted when viewing full text results): No, although hit-term highlighting is available in the Accession Number (AN) and All Markush structures and related text (MSTR) fields.[4]
Keyword In Context Display (generates excerpts containing searched-for terms for quick review): Yes, display formats are available that will highlight the hit structure from a search result in red (including any sub-groups that contributed to causing the hit).
Linear Reference Viewing (clicking “Next” takes you to the next patent in the hitlist): No, searching is conducted via an online session transcript.
