Analyzing Results

Bibliographic data from CAplus may be displayed in the MARPAT file, and as previously discussed, this data is not searchable; however, it can be used to analyze and sort MARPAT results sets. Most files on STN support these analyze and sort features, which can be initiated by command-line or via the STN Express Discover! Wizard (see the STN article for more information).

Below is a brief description of post-processing commands that can be run in the MARPAT file:
The SELECT command is used to create E-numbers containing terms taken from the specified field in an answer set, which may be then used to explore the terms in a system thesaurus.

The ANALYZE command is used to create an L-number containing terms taken from the specified field in an answer set, which may then be used for statistical analysis.

The SORT command is used to rearrange the search results in alphabetic or numeric order of the specified field(s), which can be useful to do before reviewing search results.

The types of bibliographic data fields which are available for manipulation via these commands is very long, so it will not be reproduced here. It contains useful CAS-added data such as CAS Roles and Index Terms, and in addition it contains source bibliographic data fields such as cited reference data, priority/publication/application data, classifications, inventors, and assignee/corporate sources. A complete list of these fields can be found in the MARPAT database summary sheet on the CAS website.

The STN platform has some tools available for analyzing patent family data, including the FSORT command and the Patent Family Manager wizard. The FSORT command:[1]

creates an L-number with patent records grouped by invention and displays statistics describing the location of patent families within the L-number. Answers may be displayed by using the PFAMILY display format as well as standard MARPAT displays.

Users can utilize the Patent Family Manager on STN Express version 8.4 and higher to:[2]

  • Extract the first member from each patent family
  • Create a customized display of patent family results.

Users can create a customized display of the patent family results through the Patent Family Manager. This image is from the STN International website.[2]
