Data Coverage
Patent data collections created by topic:   Although one file that is searched by MMS, the Derwent World Patents Index, covers all patented topics, only the chemical patents are indexed in a way that allows MMS to search them. The second file that is searched by MMS, Pharm, is completely restricted to pharmaceutical patents.
Contains data indexed by non-patent-office developed classification schemes (e.g. Derwent Manual Codes): Yes, both the Derwent and Pharm files are indexed by generic chemical structure. In addition, Derwent offers other indexing terms, such as the Derwent Manual Codes.
IPC code searching: Yes, both the DWPI and Pharm files contain IPC indexing. It is not clear whether the Pharm files have been retroactively updated to reflect IPC-8. In any case, a class search along with a chemical structure search would probably be used relatively rarely, so this is not a major concern when using MMS.
US Classification searching: Yes, the DWPI file contains US classifications. However, the Pharm file does not. However, class searching is usually not a major concern when using MMS.
ECLA code searching: No, neither file contains ECLA indexing. However, class searching is usually not a major concern when using MMS.
Japanese F-terms or File Indexing: No, neither file contains Japanese F-I/F-term indexing. However, class searching is usually not a major concern when using MMS.
