Managing Search Histories

Users have the option to save individual queries, complete search histories, and log files.

Individual queries can be saved using PatAnalyst’s command editor. Individual queries can be saved, modified, or even created from scratch from within the command editor menu.

The command editor accessible from the command line interface allows users to modify previous queries and use assists.

Search histories comprised of all of the strings that result in a hit list and can be accessed using the "..history" command in the command line, or by clicking on the history sidebar on the right hand side of the interface. Individual search strings can be kept or deleted at the user’s discretion. The search history table sidebar is accessed by clicking the history sidebar found on the right hand of the interface of the interface. This search history listing can be scrolled, opposed to the command line interface history which must be viewed 10 at a time.

The search history sidebar interface lists order of entry, alphabetically by query, and number of results.

Log files go one step further than search histories, comprising of all commands entered instead of just the search queries. Log files can be saved, loaded, or appended to existing log files.

Additionally, it is important to note that search queries can be combined via referencing the relevant search string numbers in the command line interface. Users are limited to combining search strings with Boolean operators. This technique is also known as query stacking.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

The search history can easily be copied and pasted from either the command line or the history sidebar. This is a plus for searchers who need to document their work for a report or even those who want to analyze their own searching patterns for thoroughness. The ease of stacking queries also makes searching more efficient and granular so that the user can get a better sense of the composition of the hits he or she is receiving.
