The Hit List: View vs. Browse

To add to the flexibility of the viewing interface, two options are available for reviewing results: View and Browse. For in-depth review, users may choose the View option; to add speed to navigation, users may choose the Browse option.

The View and Browse options, shown next to the query on the search history page.

The two interfaces are similar. The view option is the simpler of the two, and displays records utilizing all the width available in the browser window.

The View format.

In contrast, the Browse option adds several panes to the window for improved navigation through the family record. A pane on the left hand side promotes faster navigation through the records, but shrinks the available display space. This pane contains a shortened list of hyperlinked “master patent” numbers; once a link is selected the full family record appears in the larger window to the right. Thus, the Browse interface option facilitates click-through browsing. Additionally, a second pane at the bottom of the Browse view provides links to full text records, and advanced highlighting capabilities. This pane speeds navigation through full-text sections and promote faster full text review. However, it lacks some of the highlighting capabilities that are available through the View interface. For more on these highlighting capabilities, see the Viewing Latin Text Records section in this article.

The Browse format.

Search results can be sorted by a number of bibliographic features in PatBase, including:

  • Priority Date (ascending/descending)
  • Assignee
  • Inventor
  • Publication Date (ascending/descending)
  • Patent Number
  • Most cited
  • Relevance
  • Family Number (ascending/descending) - This is an internal family ID number used by PatBase

The "Most cited" and "Relevance" features were added during a 2009 system update.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

The "most cited" and "relevance" features are useful additions to the sorting options, as they may help users to more quickly pinpoint highly useful documents. It is unclear what measures PatBase is using to determine "relevance," but it probably has to do with analysis of the search results from the standpoint of the frequency and location of the search terms within the record.
