Setting Preferences

A number of preferences can be defined from the “user settings” page, shown in the accompanying figure.

The Preferences dialog screen.

From the top:

General:
Preferred assist – the “preferred assist” setting is the default search screen. Users can make the Advanced, Express, Extended Family, Citations, or Similarity search the default page upon login. Most users will want to keep the Advanced screen their default.

Sub account – “optional” lets users enter a tracking number when the log in if they wish to; “mandatory” will not allow users to log in without designating a sub account name.

Coverage:
FamPat vs. PlusPat - FamPat contains families built around a strict algorithm that requires documents to have the same priority data; PlusPat is a bibliographic database that does not group documents by family; it only allows groups including different publication stages of the same document.

Collection List - The list of available full text collections is normally hidden unless the “show collections” box on the patent search form is checked; this setting can make showing the list the default.

Display:
Family Representative/Publication Number - Two new options were introduced to the Display section in QPAT version 6.0. In earlier versions, the representative family member of a FamPat family was determined internally. Now users have a say in how the representative family member is chosen. Users can instruct the system to always display the earliest or latest publication from a family. They can also choose document numbers from certain countries (by order of preference) as the default representative family member for a FamPat family.

Hit-list - “folded” vs. “unfolded” – If unfolded is chosen, then the most representative image and the abstract are shown. Otherwise basic bibliographic information is shown.

Field format – “short” vs. “detailed” - Toggles between showing only the field abbreviation (e.g. TI), or the full field name (e.g. “title”) in the field description when viewing search hits.

Click on Image – “zoom” vs. “mosaic” - Allows users to choose what happens when a representative image is “clicked’: the system can load a larger version of the image (“zoom”), or it can open up the drawings mosaic from espacenet (“mosaic”).

PDF – “on-the-fly” vs. “portfolio” - users can choose whether to have a PDF document download and open immediately once they click on an icon; or the document can be downloaded directly into the users’ portfolio for later viewing.

Links – Users may choose to receive active hyperlinks in their export data and alerts; if QPAT is logged on when these links are selected, they will pull up the document record.

E-mail:
These settings relate to e-mailing records of interest. Users can set a default address for the system to use; they can also choose whether to always e-mail the text or html, and whether to send it as an attachment or a hyperlink.
