According to STN International:[3]

On January 12, 2013, STN added CPC search and display capabilities and a CPC thesaurus to the CA/CAplus family of databases and the USPATFULL/USPAT2 databases. CPC capabilities are already available in the INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB databases on STN.

Plans for additional CPC implementation include the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI), a number of full text patent databases and USPATOLD.

ECLA, ICO and USPC searching capabilities remain available in relevant STN databases.

See the full press release here.

According to STN International:[4]

The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) is now available for the complete INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB databases, comprising CPC data for 36 million applications and 16 million inventions (Inpadoc families), respectively. As the CPC is a replacement for the European Patent Classifications ECLA and ICO and the US national patent classification USPC, users no longer need to include the historical ECLA and ICO classifications in their search strategies.

Please note that a comprehensive search for US patent documents requires CPC and US patent classification codes, because the USPTO will have a transition period of two years during which CPC and USPC codes are assigned.

For the time being ECLA and ICO codes will be kept as historical classification data for all patent documents not being updated. For all updated INPADOC records only CPC codes will be available.

See the full press release here.

STN now includes CNFULL, the full-text of Chinese patent applications and patent specifications from 1985 onwards.

The Chinese Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China has been the top authority for the number of patent applications. In recent years, over 500,000 applications were filed annually.

CNFULL database records contain bibliographic data including patent applicant, inventor, patent number, application, priority and related (PCT) application data, IPC and EPC classification codes, abstract and the full text of descriptions and claims. Records are available about a week after publication with the complete content. Abstracts are initially machine translated and replaced three months later by human translated text; descriptions and claims are machine translated.

Each database record contains all documents published for one application, displayed in order of appearance. Legal status data and family display formats from the INPADOCDB database are available. Online thesauri for the International Patent Classification (/IPC) and European Patent Classification (/EPC) are searchable.

The database is updated weekly and comprises over 4.5 million records and more than 3.8 million images. About 10,000 documents enter the database each week.

Numeric values of over 30 physical and chemical properties (/PHP) in almost 400 unit variants are searchable in all full text fields.

The 1MOBILITY and 2MOBILITY databases were reloaded on March 18, 2012. More details on the enhancements and changes are available in HELP RLOAD.
According to a publication on the STN International website:[50]

US application numbers consist of a two-digit series designation, corresponding to a range of filing years (i.e. series 08/ was used for filing years 1993 through 1997), plus a six-digit serial number (for example 635776).

In DWPI and DPCI, the format for US application numbers, for series up to and including series 12, excludes the two-digit series designation and comprises the application date along with the six-digit application serial, which starts again from000001 with each new series.

Series 13 Documents

The USPTO has now started publishing application numbers for series 13 with the first application in this series being filed on 17 December 2010. As an improvement to DWPI and DPCI, the series code element will now be included in the application numbers from series 13 onwards. There will be no change to the formats for any of the previous series.

See this publication on the STN International website for an example.

According to a publication on the STN International website:[51]

  • INPADOC databases enhanced with Japanese Patent Classifications, current US Classification, and Japanese legal status

The coverage of major patent classifications in INPADOC has significantly been enhanced with the addition of the Japanese patent classifications (FI-terms and F-terms), providing a considerable value to Japanese patent and utility model publications. At the same time the current US patent classification codes have been included into INPADOC, complementing the set of issued US classification codes. Prior art searching is now much more reliable for Japanese and US patent documents.

The Japanese Patent Office (JPO) applies two completely independent national classification systems to classify Japanese patents and utility models: the IPC-based FI classification and the F-term classification. Both Japanese patent classifications became available in INPADOC on STN, providing an extremely useful tool to access Japanese patent literature. The Japanese patent classifications are available for 15 million Japanese patents and utility models back to 1965.

The coverage of the US national patent classification in INPADOC has been extended to include the current US classification codes for 9,3 million US applications. These codes are available for the complete backfile of US patent documents back to 1836.

For further details and search examples see the INPADOC News 2012/02.

The European Patent Office has just started to provide legal status data for Japanese patents and utility models back to April 2011. We expect more than 90 different legal status events for Japanese publications. Use EXPAND JP/LSC to see a list of all Japanese legal status codes currently available in INPADOC.

Rolled-up IPC Core Codes are being removed from IPC reclassifications (IPCR field) in patent databases on STN to deliver more consistent and streamlined IPC content.

In 2006, the European Patent Office (EPO) introduced Rolled-up Core Codes for each advanced level IPC code in patents. This practice simplified searching across countries by providing a code that spanned assigned IPC codes at both the Advanced level and the Core level. In late 2010, the EPO stopped rolling up Core Codes and removed Rolled-Up Core Codes from the IPC reclassifications supplied quarterly to database producers and vendors.

Rolled-up IPC Core Codes have now been removed from the IPCR fields of the following databases on STN:
  • CA/CAplus family of databases
  • EPFULL
  • FRFULL
  • GBFULL
  • INPADOCDB / INPAFAMDB
  • PATDPAFULL
  • PCTFULL
  • USPATFULL / USPAT2 / USPATOLD

Rolled-up Core Codes are in the process of being removed from the set of current IPCs in WPINDEX / WPIDS / WPIX. This process will be completed by end of 2011.

There is no additional charge for DOIs in these frequently used display formats. Also, content of the Chemical Name (CN) field has been streamlined for easier review. The field now covers just chemical names (including the names of chemical classes) and, as available, Enzyme Commission Numbers.

According to the CAS website, CA/CAplus now includes "Swedish patent applications (kind code A1) from April 13, 2010 to present."[88] Swedish kind codes "are now eligible to be added to patent families:"[88]

  • A0 (Patent application made available to the public)
  • A2 (Corrected patent application)
  • C3 (Corrected granted patent)
  • T3 (Translation of EP patent)
According to STN International:
European Patent Classifications are being added to the DWPI database (files WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX) for some time already. Now thesauri are being made available for the /EPC and /ICO search fields to make navigating through the maze of codes easier.[89]

March 2011

According to the CAS website:[90]
New pricing has been introduced for the USPAT (US Patent Publications) databases (USPATFULL / USPAT2 / USPATOLD) and the IFI databases (IFIPAT / IFIUDB / IFICDB) based on the number of records from which patent numbers are SELECTed. This introduction makes the pricing of USPAT and IFI database families consistent with other full-text and value-added patent databases on STN.

February 2011

According to STN International, "the PCTFULL file on STN is completely reloaded as of February 26, 2011, and contains much more content, like names, addresses and full-text in various languages (e.g. English translations of German, French, Spanish or Russian full-texts), plus a new search feature for numeric property search in full-texts."[91]

According to STN International, "following the replacement of PCI by DPCI, the learning file LPCI will be replaced by LDPCI on February 26, 2011."[92]

According to STN International, "as of February 2011 CABA will be updated weekly. Automatic current-awareness searches (SDIs) will be available weekly or monthly (weekly is the default)."[93]

January 2011

According to STN International, within the USPATFULL and USPAT2 databases, users "will notice a big change in the previously static indexing due to a recent en masse refreshing of the CAS indexing included in these records. Effective immediately, you may also observe weekly updates to relevant index records."[94]

According to STN International:
The enhanced DPCI database has been released on STN on January 23, 2011. The coverage is substantially increased. It now provides patent citation information from 23 sources including Asian sources like Korea. Inventor, opposition, post-grant and third-party citations have been added as well.[95]

According to the CAS website, "A number of new features and enhancements, including an updated version of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary, are now available with the January STN reload of MEDlars onLINE (MEDLINE/LMEDLINE), produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM)."[96]

November/December 2010

According to STN International, "now you can locate answers to your research questions more quickly and easily when you search the archive of 50,000 unique World Traditional Medicine (WTM) patents offered by CAplus. Newly added index terms, including CAS Registry Numbers and roles, provide many additional points of access that you can use to rapidly zero in on the information you need."[97]

According to STN International, users can now "search an additional 46,850 bibliographic records recently added to the MEDLINE backfile, extending its coverage to 1946."[98]

According to the CAS website, ReaxysFile is available on STN.[99]

The CAS website also reports that "to provide more precise patent publication number crossovers, STN has introduced the PNK (Patent Number/Kind Code) field for use when transferring patent publication numbers between databases. PNK field crossovers can be used to transfer publication numbers of published applications and granted patents."[99]

Finally, there has been an "increase in search limits in the CAS databases."[99]

  • "The iteration and answer limits for CAS REGISTRY structure searching are increasing from 2 million to 6 million for online searches [and] 3 million to 8 million for batch searches."[99]
  • "The current accession number crossover limit from MARPAT to and from the CA/CAplus databases is doubling from 50,000 to 100,000." [99]

STN cites "a variety of technical, fiscal, and producer-driven factors" as the reason for the removal of these files, and further states that STN's efforts in the future will be directed to making "highly requested enhancements for key databases and development of the new STN platform," the development of which was announced earlier in 2010.

The relevant news item is available from the CAS website, at http://www.cas.org/support/stngen/stnews/dbnews/novdec10.html.

July 2010

CAS announced that the Derwent DWPI First View file will not be available on the STN platform as of July 30, 2010. A CAS press release explains that the First View file is no longer needed to provide access to newly issued patent documents, because the timeliness of the original DWPI file has improved. As of July 2010, records are added to the DWPI file within an average of 15 days after publication.

The First View file is described in the Derwent Families section of the Intellogist report on the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI).

May 2010

CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe have announced that a new STN platform is in development as of May 2010. According to the news announcement, the development effort for this new platform will aim for better integration of analysis tools, improved database content consistency, and higher system limits.

The press release can be viewed at http://www.stn-international.com/newsline052010.html.

August 2009

In August 2009, STN announced the addition of legal status information to the CA/CAplus database. The new information covers US patents and includes "assignment, reassignment, and related events." For more information, please see the STN news post about the enhancements: http://www.cas.org/support/stngen/stnews/dbnews/august09.html#caplus

July 2009

In addition to the GBFULL changes mentioned below, STN announced enhancements in other areas:

  • CA/CAplus was enhanced with new citing references features
  • EPFULL was enhanced with first-page images and applicant-cited references provided by the European Patent Office (EPO)
  • The EPO added Russian legal status data to INPADOCDB and INPAFAMDB; see our INPADOC glossary entry for more info
  • PATDPAFULL now supports Simultaneous Left and Right Truncation (SLART) for AB, CLM, MCLM, and TI fields
  • SequenceBase, the producer of the USGENE database, has included additional bibliographic and sequence information

For more details, please see STN's announcement here: http://www.cas.org/support/stngen/stnews/dbnews/july09.html#caplus

Also in July of 2009, the GBFULL file available on STN was extended to include the full text of United Kingdom (GB) applications and granted patents back to 1855. Full text is comprehensive back to 1859, and is incomplete for earlier years. The additional data was produced by LexisNexis Univentio through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. The database is structured so that patents and their applications appear together as a single record, and abstracts are present for over 95% of applications in the database. To see the announcement of this enhancement, see the STN International press release at http://www.stn-international.com/stn_news_messages_2009.html?&cHash=e1c50d4639.

June 2009

A portion of the Beilstein database became available on STN Easy in June 2009. Beilstein provides chemical substance and property data on over 10 million substances. To read more about this enhancement, see the STN International press release at http://www.stn-international.com/beilstein_substance.html.
