STN pricing varies depending upon which databases are being accessed and which interface is being used to access them. Charges are incurred on a per-use basis and are often based on connect time, terms searched, answers displayed, and answers printed. SDI alerts also may have an additional cost, charged per alert that is setup. The STN fixed-fee plans can now cover all databases, including NAPRALERT.[1]

A large reason why STN is not used as a primary search tool by many searchers is its relatively high cost. Often times, every time a term is searched or an answer is displayed, the user incurs a fee. This fact results in STN often being used only when other (less expensive) search tools have failed or are inadequate for a particular search.
