Numeric Operators
Some search databases in STN contain numeric information which can be searched as a single value, a range of values, or any value above or below a particular value. The user may type "HELP SNUMERIC" at any time to find out which data fields are numeric fields in the current data file.
Editor's Note:Numeric operators may be particularly helpful when conducting searches within patent databases, since users can then search within specific number ranges for chemical or physical properties listed within relavent patent documents.
The table below lists the numeric operators in STN and guidelines for using them.[1][2]
| Operator | Description |
| / or = | Equal to a specified value |
| < | Less than a specified value |
| > | Greater than a specified value |
| =< or <= | Less than or equal to a specified value |
| => or >= | Greater than or equal to a specified value |
| n-m | In the given value range (endpoints inclusive) |
Note: Numeric operators work the same in all databases on STN. However, the numeric fields available will differ from database to database.
Order of Operations in STN
The order of operations for the operators is:[2]
Numeric operators > (W),(NOTW),(A),(NOTA) > (S),(NOTS) > (P),(NOTP) > (L),(NOTL) > AND, NOT > OR
Note: As in other search systems, parentheses can be used to alter the order of operations.
