For the most part, viewing results in STN is a very “bare-bones,” text-based endeavor. In the STN Express and STN on the Web interfaces, the text of the title, abstract, bibliographic, and indexing information are printed out in the console-style interface. The information displayed, as well as the format it is displayed in will vary depending upon the data file that is being searched. As mentioned above, a hyperlink to the Full Text article is provided. Clicking this link opens a web browser window in which the full text document may be ordered.

This is a truncated view of the entire record display.

The answers within an answer set from a bibliographic database are typically arranged from newest to oldest, with answer 1 being the newest.

A bibliographic record.

As seen in the screenshot above, in STN on the Web, the “Full Text” link appears as a button at the top of the displayed answer. Just as in STN Express, this link will open a web browser containing more information on how to order the full text document.

In STN Easy, Titles of results (or “answers”) are listed on the web page along with a hit count for each database that was searched. The user can choose to list results in “Most Recent Order” (default) or “Best Match Order” which is a sort of relevancy ranking.

The results list can be sorted.

These titles are hyperlinked and clicking on the link will display the answer. The checkboxes to the left of the titles may also be checked to display multiple answers by then clicking on the “Display Answers” button at the bottom of the page. There is a drop-down menu which allows the user to choose whether to display checked answers across all pages of results, or only the selected answers on the current page of results. There are also options on this screen to select Display Format and Display Style.

The cost of displaying the answer will also be listed to the right of the title. The exact content of this information will vary from data file to data file but usually consists of bibliographic data as well as an abstract. See Viewing Full Text for more information on viewing answers.
