Viewing Document Images
Some data files within the STN system contain technical drawings, chemical structures, trademarks, complete pages of publications, and other graphical images. These include the patent files PATDPA, PCTFULL, and WPIDS/WPINDEX/WPIX. Unlike the chemical structure diagrams in the Registry file, for example, each image is downloaded from the STN system as a separate image file. Downloaded images will be in one of three image formats: TIFF, JPEG, or GIF. Structure images are in *.gra format, and structure images are automatically displayed in the transcript.[1]
In STN Express, when records are displayed in formats that include images, corresponding image files are automatically downloaded to the user’s PC. The files are named according to the name of the current transcript along with a sequential number. For example, if the user’s transcript is named alloys.trn, the first TIFF image downloaded is named alloys001.tif. If the next image is a GIF image, it is named alloys002.gif. If there is no transcript currently being captured, then the image files are named IMAGE001.TIF, etc. When a transcript is viewed offline, users have the option of viewing all of the downloaded images in the context of the transcript.[1]
In STN on the Web, document images can be displayed using one of the display formats that include the image, e.g., "ALLG." The images appear integrated in the text and require no further handling. Unlike STN Express, image files are not automatically downloaded to the user’s hard drive when using the STN on the Web interface. The HTML transcripts available with the "Download Transcript" option also contain the images integrated in the text.[2]
In STN Easy, graphics (when available) are displayed below the answer text. Images are saved as part of the user’s Search History. See the screenshot below.
