Viewing Full Text

Selecting a record from the hit list brings up the full text view, which includes most of the information listed on the patent. All fields including primary class, inventors, abstract, claims, and description/specification (among many others) are present on a single page, with patent drawings being the only notable absence (although in rare cases, a representative image is available).

SumoBrain automatically applies multi-color highlighting to the full text view, creating a distinct color for each term in the search query with no apparent limit of distinct colors. User-customized highlighting is not available. There are also no other highlighting assists, such as the ability to quickly navigate to the next highlighted term, or the ability to see a visual map of the highlights for the entire document.

From the full text viewing page, records can be saved directly into a new or pre-existing portfolio, or added into to the batch PDF downloading cart. This is accomplished via icons at the top of the full record view, which are visible in the screenshot above.

Links are present on the full text viewing page for:

  • creating a search query based on forward references
  • exporting citations
  • creating a search query based on US classification codes
  • viewing a backwards citation
  • moving to the next or previous patent (linear reference viewing)

editors note iconEditor's Note:

The full text view in SumoBrain is simple and fast. Displaying all of the full text information on one page makes browsing and searching easy for the user. For example, although there are no quick links to get to the description or claims sections, users can easily find these sections since they are clearly labeled and fully searchable with a control+f search in the browser window.

Additionally, although not user controllable, the highlighting feature makes finding interesting sections of the text much easier. Users may be disappointed by the lack of customization to group highlighted terms of their choosing on the fly, but multi-colored highlighting puts SumoBrain ahead of competitors Google Patent Search and Patent Lens, and is a nice touch.

As in the hit list, patent drawings are not available. The lack of this feature is a big hindrance to users searching in the mechanical arts, as they often rely on patent drawings to quickly assess the relevance and content of a patent.

Another missing feature is the ability to download a PDF directly from the full record view. The system instead requires users to first add the record to the "cart," and then download PDF copies in batch. This is a workflow hiccup that may frustrate some users.
