The Hit List

The hit list format in SureChem changes depending on the number of collections searched. If multiple collections are searched, a hit list showing the number of results and an option to show the top five hits from each collection is shown.

From here, a user can select to display all of the hits from a single collection, which brings up the same hit list that would automatically appear if only one collection was searched.

In both hit lists, a pane for filtering the results of the query appears on the right hand side of the page. In this pane, users can change the original query to create a new search result, or simply narrow down the present results. Users can filter by keyword, assignee, inventor, SMILES code (including specifying a similarity requirement), and date range. If a SMILES code is input, users have the option to draw the structure in an embedded version of MarvinSketch in order to preview it for correctness before submitting the new query.

As of August 2009, SureChem users will find that a filtered hit list will now immediately reflect the reduced number of hits.

Users can enter a SMILES code in the filtering menu and preview the structure with the Draw button. Alternatively users can enter MarvinSketch directly from the filtering menu by clicking on the window.

Users can also sort results, either chronologically or by "confidence." Confidence in the SureChem system is not quantified with a number or rating indicator.

Users of SureChem also have the option to do the following from the hit list: export chemical structure data of a selectable molecular weight range to Excel, Word, and Email formats, export text to Word or Email formats, view a printer friendly version, create an alert, or view Assignee and Inventor reports. The Assignee and Inventor reports are ordered lists of the top assignees and inventors reflected in the search results.

The single-collection hit lists display preview information for each document to give the user some indication of content. This information includes the title, full abstract, publication number, kind code, inventor, assignee, and application date. No representative patent drawings or related chemical structures are shown on the hit list. All keywords present in any of the shown information are highlighted in a single color. The number of hits is given with each result list, and in order to navigate through the records, users have the option to jump to a page or move to a previous or next page.

editors note iconEditor's Note:

The hit list is simple and easy to manage. The presence of the full abstracts (when available) can help the user choose to further investigate each record at the slight expense of crowding screen real estate. In addition, the filtering pane is a help to users who want quick access to modifying the hit results, or even changing the original query without returning to the search form.

The highlighted keywords immediately draw attention to the user's search terms; however, there are no chemical structure images on the hit lists, as in some more sophisticated patent search engines. This lack of drawings, even as an option, is inconvenient for users who are more visually oriented.

Finally, the design choice of only displaying results from one collection at a time is cumbersome, but users may find the option of displaying the top five choices from each collection to be a suitable alternative.
