The Surf-IP search platform ceases operation as of September 30, 2011. A list of websites of other IP offices where users can conduct patent, trademark, and design searches will be posted by IPOS after Surf-IP ceases operations.

Weighting and Ranking Features

Surf IP uses a proprietary relevancy ranking system that gives results a relevance ranking from one to five stars, with five stars being the most relevant. From the FAQ in the help guide: “The search system scores documents based on the titles. It involves sophisticated technology wherein the search words, as well as their synonyms and related words are taken into account in scoring a particular document.”[1] The results are therefore sorted based upon the relevance determined by the proprietary system, rather than by alternate methods such as publication number, filing date, or publication date.
