Family Data
Family data in TotalPatent is partially derived from the EPO’s INPADOC family file. Three family definitions are used in TotalPatent: within the system, these are known as “Main,” “Extended,” and "INPADOC" families.[1]
- Main - The definition of a “Main” patent family in TotalPatent is the same as an Espacenet family: a simple (type 1 as defined by WIPO) patent family, where all documents share exactly the same priority data. For publications without a Priority Number, the Application Number should be read as the Priority Number.
- Extended - An “Extended” family in TotalPatent is equal to a complex (type 2 as defined by WIPO) family, where "all publications having directly or indirectly a Priority Number in common belongs to the extended patent family. For publications without a Priority Number the Application Number should be read as the Priority Number."[1]
- INPADOC - The "INPADOC" family in TotalPatent is the well known INPADOC family (type 3 as defined by WIPO), where all documents have at least one priority document in common.
More information can be found in the Definitions of Patent Families article.
