Login and Logout
The interface functionality in TotalPatent is designed to complement TotalPatent’s position as a "next-generation" patent search tool. The user interface features tabbed navigation, advanced buttons and menus, and is fairly intuitive overall.
The TotalPatent login screen is straightforward and will be familiar to those experienced with other web-based search tools. The login page includes user friendly features such as ‘Remember My Sign-In Information,’ which, when activated, stores the searcher’s username and password in the browser so that this information don’t have to be entered again in future sessions. There is also a hyperlink on this screen to view system hardware and software requirements needed when using TotalPatent, and links are provided for if the user has forgotten their user ID or password. Also on the login screen is a checkbox to activate Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption for the entire TotalPatent session. By default, both the ‘Remember My Sign-In Information’ and the ‘Use a Secure Connection’ checkboxes are unchecked. See the screenshot below:
After logging in for the first time, the user is presented with a ‘Terms of Use’ page. After clicking ‘Accept’ at the bottom of the page, the main search interface appears.
Logging off can be done at any time by clicking the ‘Sign Out’ link in the upper right hand corner of the interface. After five hours of inactivity, users are automatically logged off.[1]
