Security

When connecting to TotalPatent, a user’s login information is always sent via a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection.[1] In addition, users have the option, via a checkbox on the sign-in page, to conduct the entire search session over an SSL connection. SSL is a standard encryption protocol that ensures data is encrypted before it is transmitted to the LexisNexis servers, preventing anyone who might wish to intercept the communications from being able to understand them. SSL is used by most competitor search engines as well.

Options to lower TotalPatent security include an automatic login feature. By selecting the box labeled “Remember my sign-in information,” users will be automatically logged in to TotalPatent whenever they visit the site. According to the user guide, selecting the "Remember my Sign-In Information" option will only save your user name and password for the computer that you're currently using.[1] Users may set this option based on the security level of their own workstations. The figure below shows this security option on the log-in page.

The TotalPatent log-in page displays various security options.

TotalPatent also has a feature that allows users to select a security question and a security email address (in addition to the general email address) in case they lose or forget their active password. This feature can be activated from the search preference page. The figure below shows the security options available from this page.
